WHAT IS BIRTH TRAUMA?

Birth trauma is a broad term, which relates to a traumatic experience that occurred during any phase of childbearing, including the pre- and postpartum period, conceiving and early motherhood. Some women develop post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and many others feel emotionally distressed after their birth which can lead to experiencing some trauma symptoms.

 

What feels traumatic to you may not feel traumatic to someone else, as our past experiences impact how to process new events. Birth trauma is unpredictable and is never your fault.

How can EMDR help me?

WHAT IS EMDR?

EMDR is an internationally recognised psychotherapy for trauma and distressing memories. It is short for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. EMDR is used to help those living with difficult past experiences that are still emotionally affecting them in the here and now. This happens because disturbing events are often stored in the brain in isolation, preventing your brain's natural desire to process the memory fully, and file it away as a past event. EMDR can desensitise the emotional distress of a traumatic event, and help prevent it from shaping how you think, feel and behave now.

 

The effects of birth trauma can have a big effect on your day-to-day life, including avoiding all triggers of the birth, feeling frightened about getting pregnant again, and influencing your bond with your baby and the world around you. This is where EMDR can make a real difference. It’s main intention is to reduce/eliminate distress and symptoms of PTSD, to increase maternal confidence in the now and for future birth experiences, and to help you gain a sense of control over what happened to you and your baby.
